Trying out a gallery show. If it is really cool I will post the rest of our activities. As for the pics This summer my brilliant Uncle produced and directed Broadways Peter Pan in Pocatello Idaho. I was privileged to be called in to paint the set. The show was amazing and Tristan just loved Peter Pan. He wanted to fly every day! So of course we had to be characters for Halloween! It was so fun. Tristan is Pan of course. Tessa is Tinker Bell, Mark is Hook, and I am Tiger Lily.

I must admit I just felt like dancing and singing the “ugah wug” song all night!

We carved some pumpkins..I think Mark and Tessa won out with their candy corn puffer fish. Oh and we made the Camero into the coolest Trunk or Treat Car ever…..The Red Dragon. It was suprisingly simple. With Sherrie’s help, we came up with an awesome design and didn’t even put the thing together until that night! I was amazed at how totally cool it was.

Yes, I know it is not Halloween yet, but what a fun time to celebrate! I’m not much for going overboard on holidays, yet I love some decorations, fun activities and festiveness. It seems that some people just have such a hard time finding the balance!

Where I come from…aka my parents family….we DO holidays. In fact we love them. Growing up with seven children and two adults who never grew up it was always someone’s favorite holiday. My mom loved to decorate and my dad loves to celebrate so no matter what we had Great Holidays!

Where my husband comes from….(his parents family)…they Don’t Do holidays. At least that is they don’t do them anymore, and haven’t for a while. I mean when you are okay to stay at home and not go see the big firework show for the Fourth of July you really Don’t Do holidays.

Well this always puts me in the fine predicament of finding that perfect balance! Of teaching my husband and son about the joys of a little holiday while hardly spending anything or over scheduling anyone’s time.

This year in particular, as many of you might be feeling, it doesn’t make much sense to through a big Halloween bash. At least not for my family. Starting out we haven’t got much by way of the years which would mean acquiring all the decorations, food, and festivities necessary for a fun, goulish time! I talked with my mom and she is throwing a big schindig for all the neighbors….but after 29 years of having children in the house she has practically everything she needs already! (This is why it’s always a good idea to have friends at different stages in their lives…..everyone is rich in something after all!)

That doesn’t mean we cannot plan celebrations and have a great time. Halloween doesn’t take much, as the holiday itself consists basically of a costume, bag and candy….but we can make it fun all week with just a little bit of planning.

First and most important the costume: After years of dressing up I have come to three simple solutions to the costume problem:

#1 Decide Early and Be Happy: Don’t stress about having the perfect costume. You didn’t when you were young so don’t start now. If you want to be superman….and everyone else does to..So What! By deciding early you can have all those little extras that make your super man super!

#2. Simple Can Be Fabulous: If you have followed my advice in #1 then this will be so much easier to follow. Generally everyone has “stuff” around the house that when put together can make a super costume! (Infact you can even start with this step) You never know what odd items will come in handy as you build your costume. This year for instance I used two of the most unlikely items around my house for costume accessories. A sippy cup lid became the perfect completion for my hubby’s coach costume headset. And an old pair of slippers cut apart and hot glued back together became the awesome set of shoulder pads for my 18 month old and his football outfit.

#3. While it may be inciting to have a different costume for each party you go to No One really cares. I am absolutely serious about this. When I was in college and the HOWL was the ultimate rage of parties to be at for Halloween. I went with some friends one of which spent quite a bit of money creating the perfect AllyG costume. Very Distinct, Original, and Unmistakable when I saw him grace the party the following year with a new girlfriend and a different group of friends I realized…NO One Cares!!! Where is the rule that says you have to come up with something new? Not saying you can’t, just saying you don’t have to the point is to dress up and have fun!

All in all we only spent $15 on three costumes this year (that’s $5 a costume, and trust me they won’t look like $5 costumes) So what’s the next big part of Halloween? The Pumpkins Of Course!!! Always one of my favorite parts. Carving a Jack-O-Lantern.

Growing up we all had our own pumpkin to carve, which we would pick out from the pumpkin patch at the local farm. Living in southern Florida we just don’t have that option….there went one fun activity…:( But you know it doesn’t really matter. In fact I only bought ONE pumpkin this year. We carved it today and had a blast.

My baby didn’t need his own. For as much as he likes to get dirty he was actually a little shy about sticking his hand in the pumpkin goo. It was great for our relationship making it a team effort. The design we picked was quite challenging…yet we each took turns and are equally proud of our accomplishment.

So as for the rest of the week. We have a few simple, yet fun activities planned. Tomorrow is our church harvest party. The teenagers have set up games and fun for the little ones. We’ll all dress up and have a ball. Wednesday, I think we will roast marshmallows over the little pumpkin, and thursday or friday we’ll mix up some rice crispy treats and decorate with candy korn and m&m’s. Then come Halloween we will trick or treat and maybe watch a scary Supernatural!

It will all be over, we’ll have made a few memories, spent very little money, and I’ll post some more pictures here on the blog.

A few posts back I talked about achieving and setting goals. And how anything is possible. This is still true, but I had a recent revelation as to why it is true.

2 Nephi 2:25 states that, “Adam fell that men might be and men are that they might have Joy.” A simple scripture, one that can brinhg hope and comfort to the lowliest of souls, and yet far more complex and important than I had ever previously imagined. Let me ask you, “What is Joy?”

This is a very important question…when you start to dig deeper and aim higher the answer is nothing short of astounding. But, I regress and begin with what joy is NOT: Joy is not merriment. Else the scorn at the statement ‘Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die,” would not make sense. Merriment is but a fleeting happiness here one moment and gone the next. It must forever be sought out and outdone.

Joy on the other hand is everlasting. It does not fade with the evenings festivities. It does not experience a roller coster of peaks and valleys. Rather, it is a constant increase, like good stock that no matter the day to day effects on it over time will always increase.

A deeper study of the term Joy (when it comes to scriptural refrences, expecially those comming direct from God through his prophets) Leads me to believe that Joy is Everlasting Happiness, and for it to be everlasting happiness must needs be that it is Eternal and Exhalted.

Eternal…because it cannot end or else it would cease to be Everlasting and Exhalted because without which it would not have continual increase and therefore would not be that good stock and Happiness would be lost.

I look at it this way: When are we truely happy? After searching every possible answer I have come to the conclusion it is only when we are fufilling our true and God given potential. I assume this is true for every species on the planet. A pansy seed is ment to grow and develop into a pansy..if it does not it becomes something less, something diesased or unnatural.

Each of those words, less, diseased, unnatural…conjures feelings contrary to that of happiness and joy. Thus, it is when we do what we were ment to do that we excell, are blessed, and happy. However there is a hitch here. We must choose to do it.

I have known several dancers who though excelled at physical movement and had every advantage and potential to become great, were miserable because they felt forced into following a path that they did not choose. My brother on the other had choose to pursue a desire to play football. Now while his potential in the given sport was not as great as many others…he’s under 6ft for one. He did have a measurable amount of potential in that field.

When he was told by others that playing first string in highschool would be the end of his experience he refused to give up. He knew he had not achieved his potential for the field and would not give it up until he had achieved maximum with it. He walked on to a college football team and after a year had earned a scholarship spot. Many of us closest to him felt that he had achieved his full potential in the field and congratulated him. It was not easy for him, but he was always happy.

Even when times were rough, and no one believed in him…I could see that inside he was content and happy. Much more than the athletic guys I watched the games with who had given up on their potential and always complained with regret how they could do it better. So sad.

So here we are to have joy, then why is it so difficult?

2 Nephi 2:27 says, “Wherefore men are free according to the flesh:and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.”

So not only is Joy a choice, but Joy is the result or outcome of a choice. When we choose eternal life and liberty (freedom from sin)..we recieve Joy. And yet there is one who desires not our Joy but rather our misery. All things in their opposite, afterall. It is inner critic, the little devil on our shoulder…pointing our faults, hiding our potential from us. Encouraging us away from being what we are ment to be.

To use the army slogan, Be All You Can Be is such a great way to remember just how to have Joy!

I feel obligated to follow up with my last post before I continue on to the pressing thoughts of today. So as for scripture, and let me be breif: When I was younger I would often read the scriptures and delight in how they had so much advice and knowledge of what to do in life, however I would get irritated that I could no where find any good information on how to get dates or make money.

You cannot deny that those are two very important parts of everyone’s life, and yet the Bible of Life itself seemed not to contain them. Boy was I wrong! Scripture is written so that by and through the spirit one may learn when he/she is ready. This is written in the scriptures very plainly! And funny it should be, but now that I am ready I see just how plain and clear the pathway to temporal success is laid out in the first chapters of Nephi. I emplore you to read them again. I will not quote just now as there are other pressing concerns on my mind that you may find more immediate benefits from, however know that I testify that if you seek the answeres dilligently in the scriptures you will find!

So what more pressing matters could I possibly have than making money or getting dates? Well luckily I solved the latter some time ago and now have the added pressures of a husband, toddler, and baby on the way! This is the far greater challenge than just getting dates. Infact the greatest challenge involved with family is what to do with it.

I know and understand greatly the importance of family activities. Getting together, staying together, playing together…it is what brings us closer to one another and creates those lasting bonds. What I never anticipated was how much more difficult it had become over the years since I was a child (and not too long ago). With video games, tv, and overtime zapping precious hours away from our family it is eminent that we put on our creative caps and come up with things to do together daily.

As a newlywed, I thought at least eating together would be easy. That was always something my family did no matter what. Well little did I know people grow up in different types of homes. My husband who eats three times as fast as I do, consistently finishes his meals, clears his plate and leaves to do whatever it is he does. It seemed that the only quality conversation time we got over a meal was if it was eaten out.

As our budget cannot cover eating out every single night, not to mention with a baby eating out became less and less of a conversational haven. I have been forced to come up with more and more creative activities for our family. Now while I consider myself a very creative individual this becomes increasingly difficult when you need to do it every day!

Now add the challenge of a rambunctious 18 month old and the activities have to go beyond sitting down and watching some television program together. So for all you young families out there I have had some small successes this weekend that may help shake things up a bit for you and create real bonding time and variety in your otherwise consistent lives.

Thursday, after going to the pond twice on an attempt to feed the ducks I finally got an insight of inspiration of what to do for my son that would help him experience life, not bore me, and not include watching cartoons! I logged on to BabyLovesDisco.com I downloaded there disco mix and had a mini private dance party with my son. It was a blast! We got out the Gymboree bubbles (they last the longest) blew them around the room and boggied down. He was entertained for an entire hour! I got a little needed pregnancy exercise and when my husband walked in on us he had the biggest smile on his face and joined right in! What a change from coming home and sitting infront of the tv/computer! That was wonderful.

I wanted to continue to have learning and growing opportunities for my son and my family throughout the weekend, this is not easy. And yes I was still irritated when my husband would rather play 4 hours of HON on the computer than be creative and help me come up with something to do. However, when I convinced him that going to the park to find the ducks would be fun he agreed. Of course the weather was hot as it always is here in southern florida, but not too hot. We were able to enjoy eachothers company and feed the ducks!

My boy at 18 months can almost say every animal he might see in the park down here, rabbits, fish, butterfly, but his favorite is ducks! How awesome it is to see the effects of effort. Not only did the outing effect my son, but I overheard my husband telling some friends at church on Sunday how wonderful his trip to the park was and how much he enjoyed watching his son play at the park. What wonderful results!

If you can’t tell I was happy! The challenge continues… Although I have found some helpful aids. Check it out if you would like. http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,31-1-15-12,00.html

Beauty!

There are a few things Iwant to focus on today! They have been on my mind the past few weeks. First of all the purpose of this blog, second individuality, and third scripture! Oddly enough they all relate to one another. Infact everything in this world relates, but that is for another day!

So as for this BLOG. Why write it? Well I am going to be selfish (or rather self aware) for a moment here and answer the pongient question what’s in it for me? While I am happy to share with everyone my thoughts, life, and adventures I am not particularly egotistical and having others read about me does not shall we say get me off. And while I hope to reach out to some of you and make a difference as well as recieve support for my endevors, creations, and the like…that cannot be the purpose in writing either, because frankly it is never consistent and unscientific as if I am reaching anyone.

So what is in it for me? I will jump ahead to the topic of scripture for just a moment here; when I was younger I was taught that writing in a journal would not only be a record for your children, but a sense of enlightment for yourself. As I have gotten older I have only seen affirmation after affirmation of this principle. Infact, as I remember the greatest times in my life I was keeping an accurate and current record of my growth, my trials, triumphs, insights and so forth. So to answer what’s in it for me, It is the affirmitive in personal growth and happiness that comes from logging ones thoughts, trials, soutions, and growth.

Now as for doing this public instead of private. That answer is simple. All my journals have always been ment to be read by someone at some point anyway. Besides that we are not all so unique and alone in this world that we would not benefit by sharing our experiences, as we all have commonalities. Which brings me to my next thought of individuality!

While studying for my ACT’s I read a story that enlikend our individuality to that of a snowflake, each one different and not quite like another. And in that fact all the same, because all were not identical. The story which was much longer stuck with me because in our quest to be unique we become more and more like everyone else…..different!

If you have noticed my headline phrase, “Enlightment For The New Rennissance” you may have wondered why Rennissance and why New. Well that is where individuality comes in. You see each of us are totally unique, but that is only because we are multifauceted. If we were not built of so many parts do you really think there would be such variety in the world? NO. It is the different combinations of these parts that makes us unique.

Once the snow flakes were huge as we rode the chair lift at Grand Targhee, so big we could see every detail. We were determined to prove the no two alike concept wrong. And you know we did after a fashion. Two flakes landed on my coat identical to one another, identical that was except for a snowy glob on the end of one flake. Two landed on my brothers gloves identical! Well, except that one was definately bigger than the other. You see it is those variations, distortions, and proportions that make us unique.

In this I must be true to all of who I am. Frankly if not why would you read this. The world tries to force us into a box, into a particular mold. You’re an artist they say, good be extreme, but don’t be conservative. You’re an entrepreneur, great be business like, but don’t be a mommy….You get the idea. Well the time has come for a New Rennissance: a time where we can be all that we are. Afterall Divinci was not only an accomplished artist, but a scientist, philosopher, and deaply religious as well.

And while that brings me to my third point scripture, I see I am out of time for writing….I do have a Mommies schedule and must accomplish as much as possible to balance my very, very, individual rennissance life!

As of today I have rescheduled blog time into my day so do check back soon for the continued thought.

I must apologize for setting up this blog and then disappointing all of my followers by not posting for a little over 3 months…You can only guess why. Well yes sir I am pregnant with our second child!

This is rather exciting and while we thought it was the right time…planning the spacing of your children and all….I completely forgot what pregnancy does to ME!!! That and how much more challenging it would be with a 1 year old around! It is funny with all the planning and plotting how such a little thing like my health could go amiss!

And yet I am sure many other Moms whether they work from home or are out in the work force can be sure to find themselves in the same prediciment. Now if I may preface. Unlike most women I do not get sick during the first trimester. …. Well not puking my guts out anyway! It is actually rather interesting to deal with what I have. I don’t know if you have ever had mono…but that is what I feel like when I am pregnant.

You can see how easily that could go amiss. I have two girlfriends who are also pregnant and while the one is puking every hour and the other is at risk of fainting constantly, I hear their husbands say to mine, “…and your wife geeze she is perfectly fine!” Perfectly fine that is with enough naps in the day!!!

Naps which I do not get! I am grateful that my son finally started taking regular naps. That is when I accomplish the most work as my most important calling and job is being a great mother. It is far tooo true that, “NO success can compensate for failure in the home!” If I am going to bring children into this world than I am going to personally see to it that I am blessing the world with productive, innovative, and caring adults. The kind who get stuff done!

Enough of my ranting needless to say I ended up sleeping the only time I can and that is when the baby sleeps! As for now I am back in a constant grove, but do not feel too amiss if I lax off come Winter as I will be BIG with child! Untill then I have lots to do, lots to say, lots to give, and lots to share!

When initially setting out to accomplish a goal of life It is easy to do everything right. You set up a game plan. Schedule times, dates, and resources. Everyone has goals in life, things they desire to accomplish. Some harder some easier. But all life goals can be accomplished.

The problems usually don’t hit you at the start. In fact they usually come in stages. A very difficult goal of my life I accomplished recently was competing in a Triathlon. I had no illusions of grandeur and new I would not be competitively ranked. But starting off I could not even swim so just completing it would be my goal 1.

Set up was easy. I found a great group of girls with the same goal and willing to support each other, no matter our current fitness level or skill level. They started training before me since I had just had my first child and needed to wait six weeks to heal.

Six weeks behind and absolutely no swimming skills. I jumped in the water with my friends and began training. It was difficult at first. I felt so far behind as they worked on increasing laps and I worked on putting my face in the water.

We rode our bikes and ran occasionally. Swimming every day I just knew I would reach my goal 1. That’s when reality set in. It was 2 weeks away and going to be a 400 meter open swim and I hadn’t even put together a lap without stopping.

My heart sunk as I felt I had already failed in completing my goal. The crazy thing was my friend and fellow athlete Cece kept encouraging me and telling me I could do it! For some reason I believed her. I guess it was faith, her ingenious safety rashgaurd, or perhaps my own inner determination.

But I realized that reality was what I made it. There are no predetermined rules that say if you cannot swim a lap today, you won’t be able to swim 8 next week. So I pressed on. The crazy part…exactly two days before the meet I connected 8 laps 400meters! I was ecstatic! My progress was tremendous. I knew I could do the triathlon! This goal of life was on its way to being completed.

Saturday was race day! Nervous were running up and down my spine. I kept looking at that water. A battle of fear great fear, and determination was raging inside my head.

The time for my heat came and about 50 twenty something’s headed out into the murky lake. We had to tread water for about 3 minutes before the whistle blew. At this moment the war cries of fear were monstrously loud in my head. There was lake grass everywhere and I was having a hard time staying afloat. Not to mention every time I found a clear spot five other competitive girls were vying for it.

I looked back at the ground with longing eyes….but I had come so far to quit now. You know I just might have, but luckily the whistle blew and it was swim or be trampled. I wasn’t confident enough in my ability to start strong with the front of the pack and tried to ease my way to the back. That was actually increasingly difficult. Nonetheless I pressed onward.

Keep on swimming, keep on swimming…..keep on swimming I said to myself and you know that first orange buoy marking 1/3 of the swim was soon in front of me. (This is where short term….very short term goals are initiated!) I can do this I thought and began towards buoy #2. I was finally regaining my confidence just meters from buoy #2 when suddenly there was a mass of hard core 30 something men right on top of me! I went under. I was about to panic when that spirit inside me.

That human spirit inside us all spoke, “you can do it! you are more than half way just give it your all!” I kicked it in. I could swim! No one could tell me I couldn’t or make me not. I began swimming right alongside those superior male athletes and to my surprise ran into the back foot of one as I began to over take him.

This startled me and knocked me out of my groove. I went under again and this time when I came up I was right next to the safety canoe. She could pluck me out of this chaos and save me. “Are you alright,” she asked? “Do you want out?”

I looked at here in disbelief. Here was my chance at not drowning, and yet what she was really offering me was failure! After all I hadn’t even pulled my safety guard.

“No I am fine,” I said with assurance I didn’t even know I had. I completed that leg of the triathlon. Swam to the end. Dragging my tired body up onto my feet and towards my bike. After all I wasn’t done; far from it!…

I will continue with my story tomorrow, I just want you to take this time and this day to think about your goals of life…Are you facing demons as you reach out to achieve them? Is the Demon yourself? Some outside unaccounted for factor like lake grass? Or all those around you who’s competitive drive might be pushing you under?

I will admit while I am well practiced in setting and achieving goals this one was definitely the hardest. My very life was on the line literally. And I was scared for it. It is because of this that I am so capable of relating to struggles with any goal and love to help people overcome them.

So leave a comment, send me an email. And I will see you tomorrow with leg 2 of my triathlon goal!

After having my first child 1 year ago tomorrow! Happy Birthday Tristan! My husband and I were both concerned on how we would teach our child to have RESPECT!

So many of the youth, the people today do not have respect for anything. We do not want to raise a child who disrespects elders, won’t listen to teachers, and thinks he is above the law. Naw, we want our child to have the Respect of others, and the only way he will have that is to give it! Which means somehow we have to teach it to him.

Well today I recieved some keen insight on just how to do that, and where I already am messing up!

I was listening to Margaret S. Lifferth today in a session of general conference. (she is the 7th frame) and she was talking about having Respect for others. You can listen to it here: Sister Lifferth’s Talk

She mentioned using titles and such, but what stuck out to me the most was Respect for Property. Now I don’t go about vandalizing, but It really got me thinking…

So many of us want more out of life. More cars, more clothes, more friends, more whatever. But what if there is a direct correlation between how much you obtain in this life and how well you take care of that which you do have!

Yes I am talking gratitude, but I am also talking about the simple, benign, and mundane like CHORES! Yep yucky, hate to do them chores. Oh how I hate them!

Oh I love to work! Ask me over to help paint your house or redo your roof and I will surly be there sweating along side you. But ask me to get up everyday and repeat the same task only to have to do it again tomorrow…And now with a little toddler I need to mop twice a day!! Not for me I will tell you. In fact I often tell my husband those very words.

But I realized today, that perhaps, my lack of dicipline in maintaining a clean house may have a larger effect than I think. Of course I feel more at peace when I get ambitious and clean everything! But what if there is more to it.

What if being a good, dare I say, homemaker! Has an impact on how respectful my children grow to be, what if it has an effect on how successful I am in work, what if that benign and irritating task is really an opportunity for me to grow and develop characteristics that will better this planet?

Just a thought!

I really do believe that which we obtain materially is directly related to how well we care for and cultivate what we already have. This applies to much more than housework! So much more…but some examples.

Some good friends of mine are Millionaires and when I go to their house, naturally they have a lot of goods, but everything is in its place. Tidy and well kept. Like everything is of value! That is typical, and typically overlooked with the, “they must have a maid.”

But what about before they could afford all that? My husband has taken great care of his Z28 Camero ever since he got it. It still runs and looks amazing, but when he wanted a new car his life put him in a position to have whatever he wanted. Coincidence? Maybe not.

You reap what you sow.

Farmers who fastidiously maintain their crops generally have the most delicious fruit and bring in the most profit.

The friendships that you take the time to care for, and maintain are always the ones you can draw upon in hard times. I have noticed the more I tend to my relationships with others, the more even more people want to have a relationship with me!

I shall conlcude, look to where you lack respect in your life? If it is also an area where you desire more from than start doing the nitty gritty and in my case dirty tasks you must to obtaing that which you desire!
